Sutter Puller Filaments

Appropriate filament selection depends on your research application, but a general guideline for filament selection is as follows. Box filaments are recommended for large diameter, double-barrel or aluminosilicate glass. Box filaments are particularly suitable for slice preparations where long, parallel walls would aid penetration. If using a box filament, the size of the square box should be approximately 1.0 to 1.5 mm larger than the OD of the glass.

Trough filaments are an excellent general purpose filament, and are recommended for patch pipettes produced from standard or thin-wall glass. For either type of filament, increasing filament width tends to increase the length of the pipette taper.

For the budget conscious, we recommend the FS1875 Platinum/Iridium sheet from which it is possible to make numerous filaments (approximately 25 depending on width required).
